Grupa pracowała nad albumem ze słynnym producentem Rickiem Rubinem. Na "Mercury - Act 1" Imagine Dragon porzuca naładowane metaforami teksty na rzecz emocjonalnych skrajności, nie powstrzymując się przed niczym. Tytuł został zainspirowany słowem "mercurial" w znaczeniu czegośzmiennego, żywego, nieprzewidywalnego.
