At just 17 years of age Gilby Clarke left his home in Cleveland to embark on a roller coaster rock 'n' roll career in Hollywood. His first big break came in 1984 when he replaced Geoff 'Rexx' Siegel as the guitarist for Candy who released the lone album, Whatever Happened To Fun?. He left Candy to form the metal band Kill For Thrills along with Jason Nesmith (son of former Monkees Mike Nesmith) on guitar and Todd Muscat (formerly of seminal L.A. punk band Decry) on bass. The band released the albums Commercial Suicide and Dynamite From Nightmareland before eventually disbanding. In 1991 after Izzy Stradin quit the band, Clarke was chosen to take his place in the Guns N' Roses lineup and toured with the band on their Use Your Illusion tour until 1993.
